No Heat in Durham, NC? 9 Quick Checks Before You Call A/C Medic

Furnace in need of heating repair

When it’s cold and your furnace or heat pump stops heating, you need a fix as soon as possible. No heat for multiple days just isn’t an option. Here’s a quick, safe checklist you can work through in a few minutes. If these don’t get the heat back on, A/C Medic is here for 24/7 heating repairs across Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and nearby communities. We’ll respond right away to give you complete peace of mind.

Safety first: If you smell natural gas (rotten-egg odor), leave the home immediately and call 911 and your gas utility from a safe location. Don’t flip switches or use electronics on the way out.
Carbon monoxide: If a CO alarm sounds or anyone feels dizzy, nauseous, or confused, get fresh air and call 911. Never use portable gas ovens, grills, or generators indoors.

1) Make sure the thermostat is actually calling for heat

Set it to Heat, not Auto/Cool. Raise the setpoint a few degrees above room temperature. Fresh batteries? Pop in new ones if you’re unsure. Programmable stats can be overridden manually, so no harm done.

2) Check the breaker and the indoor power switch

A tripped breaker will shut everything down. Flip it fully OFF, then back ON once. Also confirm the furnace/air handler switch (looks like a light switch) is ON.

3) Replace or reseat the air filter

A clogged filter can trigger safety limits and leave you with lukewarm or cold air. Check monthly in winter; replace at least every 3 months (more often with pets or allergies).

4) Open vents and returns

Closed supply registers or a blocked return can choke airflow and trip safety controls. Make sure furniture, rugs, and boxes aren’t in the way. Airflow restrictions can cause limit switches to shut burners off.

5) Have a heat pump? A “smoky” puff outdoors can be normal

On cold, damp days, your outdoor unit may steam during defrost mode—that’s normal. The system briefly reverses to melt frost on the coil, then goes back to heating. If steam/smoke is constant or you smell burning, turn the system off and call us.

6) Heat pump tip: Use Emergency Heat sparingly

Emergency Heat turns the heat pump off and runs backup heat only (often electric strips), which is much more expensive. Use it if the outdoor unit is iced over or clearly not running—then call A/C Medic right away heating repairs.

7) Furnace runs but the air is cold?

Give the system a few minutes after a reset. If the blower runs but the burners won’t light, or they light and shut off, the unit may be in a safety lockout from overheating or a tripped limit. That needs a pro diagnosis. Replace the filter and call us.

8) Condensate and access panels

Many high-efficiency furnaces and air handlers have safety switches on the condensate line and on the blower door. If the panel isn’t seated or a drain is backed up, the unit won’t heat. Reseat the door and look for obvious drain clogs; we’ll handle the fix.

9) Give it a quick restart

After checks above, turn the system OFF for 2–3 minutes, then back ON. For heat pumps that have iced, give the outdoor unit time to clear. If it refreezes or still won’t heat, shut it down and schedule service to avoid damage.

Simple winter habits to prevent “no heat” emergencies

  • Check filters monthly in heavy-use months (winter and summer); change at least every 90 days.
  • Keep returns/supplies clear and maintain 18–24″ of space around indoor and outdoor units.
  • Heat pumps: “Set it and forget it” is usually best. Big setbacks can trigger costly backup heat.

FAQ

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air in heat mode?
During defrost, the system temporarily shifts. Air may feel cooler for a short time. If it never warms up or the outdoor unit is frozen solid, call us.

Is steam or “smoke” from the outdoor unit normal?
Yes. Brief steam during defrost is normal. Continuous smoke, burning smells, or tripped breakers are not. Turn it off and call our local HVAC company right away.

Should I switch to Emergency Heat?
Only if the outdoor unit fails/ices over and you need temporary heat. It’s expensive to run, so it’s best to schedule service.

How often should I change my filter in winter?
Check monthly; replace at least every 3 months. Homes with pets/allergies may need more frequent changes.
